Rockhurst University is a private, coeducational Jesuit university located in Kansas City, which is the largest city in Missouri, USA, having a population estimated at a number of more than 475 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census. Kansas City is one of the 2 county seats of Jackson County, (the other one being Independence), and it is best known for having contributed to the musical styles of jazz and blues as well as to cuisine (Kansas City-style barbecue).
Rockhurst was officially established in August, 1910, as Rockhurst College. Since then, the institution has continuously grown, currently having an enrollment estimated at a number of approximately 3000 students, being highly ranked by various significant publications for the quality education offered, including by U.S. News & World Report, which, in 2007 has ranked it 14th in the Best Universities - Masters Midwest category, in which Rockhurst University has consistently appeared in the top fifteen universities.
Rockhurst's athletic teams are known as The Hawks, who compete in NCAA Division II, in 11 varsity sports, for both men and women, including in men's soccer, in which they have consistently appeared on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national rankings list, and in which they have played in 17 national tournaments, advanced to the Final Four 10 times, and finished national runner-up four times in 1973, 1976, 1979, and 1997. Since 1998, when they joined the NCAA, the men's soccer team has advanced to the national tournament in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2008.
The distinctive colors of The Hawks are royal blue and white and their mascot is the Hawk.
Among Rockhurst's noteworthy alumni, there are: Walter Ong, S.J. - world-renowned philosopher, Joseph P. Teasdale - former Governor of Missouri, George Wendt, B.A. - actor best known for his portrayal of `Norm` on the sitcom Cheers, Wild Bill Elliott - Western star best known for playing Red Ryder, and Joe Reardon - he 27th Mayor of the City of Kansas City.
